I missed you this morning, handsome. Call me. It was followed by a blushing smiley face emoji.

His fingers trembling, he put the phone away.

“Not your partner?” asked Mikey.

“No,” said Rem. He focused back on the box. “After I do all of this, Daniels will be Daniels again?”

“If you’re able to reach him, and complete all of the other steps, yes. He should be fine,” said Redstone.

“How will I know?” asked Rem. “Will there be a sign, or an indication that I’ve succeeded?”

Redstone nodded. “Oh, you’ll know. He’ll either get worse – his rage will grow and he’ll fight every instinct he has to push past the darkness, or he’ll acknowledge the evil presence, confront it, and force it out. The sage and necklace will help, plus having someone there to guide him. If he does that, then you’ll know you’ve won.”

“How long will it take?”

Redstone picked up the box. “I don’t know, Detective. It takes as long as it takes. Could be an hour, twenty-four or longer. Depends on how stubborn he is.”

Rem took the box. “Great. Then count on it being at least a week.”

“Hang in there,” said Redstone. “If his ties with you and his family are as strong as you believe, he may snap out of it faster than you think. Use that. It will be his weakness, so to speak.”

Rem sighed. Allison’s text flitted through his head, and he told himself he’d deal with it later. Trying to think, he figured his next step was to find his partner.

“What about the man who received this one?” asked Mikey, pointing at the statue. “How is he?”

Rem moaned. Shit. He had to think of Georgios, too. “He’s been in a psychiatric unit for the week. He goes home tomorrow.”

“If he’s been away from the statue for several days, and the item is no longer in his home, then that will help. But his home should be smudged, as well,” said Redstone. “If he’s made it this far, then that might be all he needs, so long as the object stays gone. I could get you an amulet and salt for him, too.”

Rem figured he’d have to be getting in touch with Phyllis sooner than she’d hoped. “I can talk to his wife, but right now, I need to find Daniels.”

“I agree. He’s your bigger concern,” said Redstone.

Mikey chuckled, her eyes wide. “Are you seriously expecting him to do all this by himself, Mason? He’s supposed to find the statue, remove it, clean and smudge the house, do the laundry, find his partner, smudge him, pull him off the ledge, and somehow have him wear the necklace, oh and move the family at the same time?” She eyed Rem. “Maybe you do think he’s Superman.”

Rem wanted to curl up on the couch. The aspirin he’d taken had barely thwarted his headache, and his fatigue and emotional turmoil from the previous night were catching up. His muscles ached and his eyelids were heavy. “I’ll manage.” He massaged his neck. “I don’t have a choice.
